HISTOIRE DE TOURBILLON 1
Harry Winston introduces Histoire de Tourbillon, a unique new collection of rare timepieces dedicated
to the complex craftsmanship of one of the most exclusive horological complications. Featuring five
distinct timepiece designs, the highly collectable series will explore the function of the tourbillon, while
celebrating Harry Winston’s continued commitment to the innovation of fine watch making. Each
unique design will be a limited edition of 20 timepieces. The first in the series, Histoire de Tourbillon 1,
will be launched Spring 2009.
Exploring the movement and sculpture of the complication, the Histoire de Tourbillon 1 envisions a
modern interpretation of the tourbillon, through innovative materials and a highly sophisticated
mechanism. Sleek and unique, the 48mm case is constructed of white gold and Zalium, an ultra‐light
zirconium‐based alloy, known for its low density, high‐thermal resistance, and high durability.
Originating in the aerospace industry, Zalium is a material exclusive to Harry Winston timepieces.
From the technical to the aesthetic, the commitment to perfection is demonstrated in all dimensions of
the Histoire de Tourbillon 1 design. On the technical side, the timepiece features two 25° inclined singleaxis
tourbillons with rapid 36‐second rotations, which work together to neutralize any effects of gravity.
This high rotational speed minimizes prolonged exposure of the regulator to natural gravity. Comprised
of 88 components, each ultra‐light system weighs a mere 0.46 grams, allowing the cages to effectively
perform the rapid 36‐second rotations.
Drawing focus to the harmony of the mechanisms, sculptural elements further emphasize the perfectly
regulated and rapid movement of the two tourbillons. Known as hypnotic art, this creates the illusion
that the two tourbillons are moving towards the sapphire crystal glass. Animated by the reflection of
light, the bas‐relief bridge further enhances the appearances of the moving elements. Hours and
minutes are displayed on the front rotating disk; the back features additional display of hours, minutes
and seconds for an exact reading of the time.
Invented more than 200 years ago, the tourbillon was developed to improve precision in mechanical
timepieces by countering effects of gravity. Perhaps the ultimate complication in haute‐horology, the
tourbillon remains a testament to the technical advancements in fine watch making, and the hallmark of
Harry Winston’s most innovative designs ‐‐ from the highly innovative Opus series, which explores the
creative extremes of fine watch making, to the Westminster Tourbillon minute‐repeater, capturing the
sounds of the Westminster chimes; to the award winning Tourbillon Glissière. In 2007, Harry Winston
relocated all timepiece operations to a new watch making facility on Chemin de Tourbillon in Plan‐les‐
Ouates, Geneva. Reflecting the brand’s successful growth, the new Timepiece Manufacture stands as a
symbol of Harry Winston’s continued commitment to maintaining and perfecting the time honored
traditions of fine watch making.
